8 Simple Tasks for a Mid-Year Financial Check-In

July 14, 2024

I think that we experience a time warp during the summer that scientists need to study. One minute it was spring and now we’re at the midpoint of the year. And you know what that means…

A mid-year financial check-in!

I put that exclamation point there to get you excited about what is undoubtedly your favorite part of the summer. I know that you sit there in your floaty in the pool and think, “Why am I swimming when I could be having MORE fun looking at my finances???”

All kidding aside, this is the perfect time to do a few simple things that might have you sailing through the rest of the year. Let’s go through this quick checklist:

 1. Review Your Goals

Remember those goals you set at the start of the year? Whether it was saving for a vacation, paying off debt, or building an emergency fund, now is the perfect time to review them. Ask yourself:

  • Are you on track to meet your goals?
  • Have your priorities changed?
  • Do you need to adjust your goals based on your current financial situation?

Adjusting your goals mid-year can help you stay focused and motivated.

 2. Assess Your Budget

Your budget is the backbone of your financial plan. Take a look at your income and expenses over the past six months. Are there any areas where you’re overspending or underestimating costs?

  • Track Your Spending: Use apps or tools to get a clear picture of where your money is going.
  • Identify Trends: Spot any spending patterns that might need adjustment.
  • Make Adjustments: Update your budget to reflect any changes in your financial situation or goals.

 3. Evaluate Your Savings

Savings are a crucial part of your financial health. Mid-year is a great time to see how you're doing with your savings goals:

  • Emergency Fund: Aim for three to six months' worth of expenses. How close are you?
  • Retirement Savings: Are you contributing enough to your retirement accounts? Consider increasing your contributions if possible.
  • Specific Savings Goals: Whether it’s for a new car, home, or that dream vacation, check your progress and make necessary adjustments.

 4. Check Your Investments

Review your investment portfolio to ensure it aligns with your long-term goals and risk tolerance. Consider the following:

  • Performance: How have your investments performed? Are they meeting your expectations?
  • Diversification: Is your portfolio well-diversified to minimize risk?
  • Rebalancing: Do you need to rebalance your portfolio to maintain your desired asset allocation?

 5. Update Your Insurance Coverage

Life changes, and so do your insurance needs. Mid-year is an excellent time to review your insurance policies:

  • Health Insurance: Ensure your coverage is adequate for your needs.
  • Life Insurance: Have there been any major life changes, like getting married or having a child, that might require updating your policy?
  • Home and Auto Insurance: Review your coverage and shop around for better rates if necessary.

 6. Plan for Taxes

No one likes a surprise tax bill. Mid-year is a good time to review your tax situation:

  • Withholding: Check if you’re withholding enough from your paycheck to avoid a big tax bill or a large refund.
  • Deductions and Credits: Are you taking advantage of all available deductions and credits?
  • Plan for Changes: Be aware of any tax law changes that might affect your situation.

 7. Prepare for the Future

The second half of the year can bring new opportunities and challenges. Be proactive:

  • Anticipate Big Expenses: Are there any significant expenses coming up, like holidays, tuition, or home repairs?
  • Set New Goals: What do you want to achieve in the next six months? Setting new financial goals can keep you motivated and focused.
